Hola! My name is Andrea Zamora and I am a recent graduate from Cal State Northridge in the graduating class of 2020! I am a first-generation graduate and the first person in my familia to graduate from college, which I carry with great pride and honor. I double-majored in Psychology and Chicano Studies and plan to incorporate both fields as I pursue a career in law, social justice, and civil rights. Considering the political climate we live in today, I aspire to help organize the community, use my voice to defend those who cannot, and encourage everyone to respect and support one another during this movement for social change. My passion has turned in a different direction and I know I have the ability to make an impact in my community, my county, my state, and ultimately my country.
As I began college, I help myself back from opportunities and remained in my comfort zone, but as my knowledge for civil rights, societal structures, cultural stereotypes, and intersectionality grew, I evolved to be an educated advocate of the Latinx community and other marginalized and exploited groups. I decided to be the change I wanted to see in the world. CHS 246 not only encouraged me to voice out my opinions and concerns but also helped me articulate a better understanding of people’s societal struggles, art, gender roles, and Chicana’s contribution to the Chicano movement. I often felt inspired by the great words of Luz Calvo, Gloria Anzaldúa, Lara Medina, Martha R. Gonzalez, I realized that I have that same ambition as a Chicana in the United States and wish to educate and influence others on topics as well.
I am grateful to have ended my time at CSUN with this enlightening course because it strengthened my new passion in life. I would like to thank Profesora Marta Lopez-Garza because she has always encouraged me to follow my voice in my writing and in class. Muchisimas Gracias! I take this experience of building this website with Michelle and Karen as an opportunity to share the important work we did in Spring semester 2020. All students of CHS 246 have done the best work possible and created personal connections with each section, making the activities meaningful to our lives. Hopefully, the readings, the music, and/or the recipes spike a new interest in Latinx culture and enlighten you as they did to me.
